ELI5 What is it all about the Symbol?

I'm holding the coins since previous bull run, but to be honest I don't know why and in which areas the NEM is better than any other coin. Recently I found out there is some kind of fork to the Symbol. Why? What will that bring to clients/customers? Who is the target both of the NEM and XYM? I tried to find out the answers to these question on their sites, but I only found buzz words. Can anybody solve the mystery, why and in which area NEM/XYM is the best or maybe even pioneer and is it worth to keep the coin still?
