What would happen if/when the US tries to regulate/ban monero?

I've seen people mention that they would target on/off ramps and I understand that would make the price tank at first but what about sites such as localmonero and sideshift which is located not in the US. Comment your thoughts or even a timeline of what you would think the US would do first. This comes to mind recently because I was talking to an acquaintance about xmr and they said I should stay away from it because of soon to be regulations. P.S. I lost all my monero in a boating accident so IRS don't come for me pls
