Looking for a reason why my syncing is abnormally slow

I'm syncing a node from scratch on a Rock 4 SE, storing the database on a midrange USB flash drive (Intenso High Speed Line, https://ssd-tester.com/intenso_high_speed_line_64gb.html)

The problem is most likely not the write speed or the CPU performance, because it seems like I have a hard time finding peers to download blocks from.

I'm doing all this using CLI in Debian.
Looking at the log there are often several minutes without any syncing going on. Example:

2023-05-04 18:11:01.213 [P2P8] INFO global src/cryptonote_protocol/cryptonote_protocol_handler.inl:1687 Synced 2533112/2878662 (87%, 345550 left)
2023-05-04 18:11:07.953 [P2P8] INFO global src/cryptonote_protocol/cryptonote_protocol_handler.inl:1687 Synced 2533132/2878662 (87%, 345530 left)
2023-05-04 18:17:22.377 [P2P8] INFO global src/cryptonote_protocol/cryptonote_protocol_handler.inl:1687 Synced 2533152/2878662 (87%, 345510 left, 0% of total synced, estimated 4.9 days left)

I try to restart the monerod service every day and even reboot the computer in case there's something messed up, but it doesn't help. When I check IP:18089/get_info it says 0 incoming and 0 outgoing connections. (edit: it is also VERY slow responding to the get_info-requests)

I'm currently at 87% as you can see, after running 24/7 for 13 days!

Where to start troubleshooting?
