Has anyone had success with the new RPC hash payment feature?

Does anybody have experience with the new RPC hash payment feature? I'm tinkering with it, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've forwarded ports 18080 and 18081 to my public node. (I opened a thread on r/monerosupport if you want to see more details.) What I seem to be experiencing is a sort of Catch-22; the node is refusing to allow connection to the daemon because it is demanding payment in hashes. However, the remote client needs to connect to the public node's daemon in order to mine to make that payment. If anyone has successfully configured the RPC hash payment feature, I would very much appreciate to see the flags that monerod was started on the public node, as well as any flags passed when starting the GUI on the client machine. I'm going to post to Stack Exchange in a little bit to see if I can find any help over there.
