Does hbar need a network to run? if so is that network growing? (aka is the hashrate growing?)

afaik those members of the network are called nodes and hbar has some big names. So is that node network growing? How is that measured? Where can I find this data? Asked another way: is the hashrate of hbar growing? I think it is based on the news, but curious about any official reporting on it? Thanks.
