Can Ethereum eventually and competitively replace credit card processing companies?

Right now, if you want to start a small business or buy from a mega corporation, it's a given that you will ultimately need to give huge credit card processing companies a share of every single sale you make. And if you're a hopeful small startup, you'll likely need even more assistance, and need to use a company like Block or Stripe or similar. Middlemen to middlemen all getting a percent of every single transaction. These companies and especially those at the top of them have become incomprehensibly wealthy by capturing a portion of every single person's wealth, the work they do, the things they create and sell. And I get it, they provide a service, but I also see that Ethereum and similar allow individuals to make direct transactions, but at present it seems that the cost per transaction and the speed of the entire network is not yet competitive with these behemoth middlemen takers.

Is it an objective, are we on a trajectory with Ethereum's technology, to eventually eliminate the need for such middlemen services and empower small and large businesses alike with a competitive alternative? If so, when and what is needed to get there? If not, why and what exactly is the objective then?
