Why bip39 words instead of numbers?

So when exploring different metal wallets I found some that allowed you to tap in the number corresponding to your bip39 word in your seed. So I wondered, why do we use words at all? Why not just take the seed that an HD wallet generates and record that? Why do we have to convert the seed into words and store the word if we are going to convert it back to the number for the sake of lengevity? Does this question make sense?
