First reported by Spanish news outlets, Reuters confirmed with the Catalan Justice Department that the 75-year-old was found dead in his prison cell on Wednesday.
The justice department told Reuters all signs point to his death being a suicide, while the AP reported, citing an unnamed official, that security personnel tried unsuccessfully to revive McAfee, whose death is now being investigated by authorities.
The apparent suicide comes hours after Spain’s National Court approved McAfee’s extradition to face charges in the U.S. that threatened up to 30 years prison time.
While he had the right to appeal his extradition, which still needed final approval from Spain’s Cabinet, McAfee’s lawyer Javier Villalba told CNBC the he could no longer tolerate being kept locked up.
After a decade of bizarre behavior and legal troubles, McAfee was arrested at Barcelona’s airport last October for charges of tax evasion filed by a Tennessee court, and had been held in jail since while awaiting the outcome of his extradition hearings.
While still detailing his exploits online, McAfee had been vehemently fighting a move back to the U.S., claiming his extradition was politically motivated and that he would have to spend the rest of his life in prison.Key Background
