How was my btc hacked (years ago) from my wallet?

I’ve often wondered how it happened, it’s gone and I’m ok with it but the way it went down:

I was using I believe bitcoin core as my wallet in 2013. As far back as I remember there was never any seed phrase produced for this wallet however I did have it protected with a password of my choosing which was about 50 characters long.

This year I found the wallet.dat file and synced it to find that in 2018 a series of transactions siphoned off my coins. I hadn’t accessed the wallet since 2014 but I do recall possibly in 2018 I had connected the hard drive that had the .dat files on it and was having trouble getting it to sync then. I forget the exact issue but I remember it was failing after trying to download the blockchain over a day or two. At that point because I couldn’t do anything I just packed away the hard drive until this year when I was able to get it working on a different machine.

Any guesses about how my coins could have been transferred out of my from recollection non seed phrase but password protected wallet?
